Secretary-Treasurer's Welcome
Updated On: Feb 04, 2009 (10:57:00) PRINT/SAVE Article

Welcome to Teamsters Local 117.  It is my great honor to tell you about your amazing Union.

Whether at the bargaining table, a community picnic or a membership meeting, Teamsters Local 117 passionately provides a voice to its nearly 17,000 members. Working together with our strong membership, we empower and unite our members to fight for economic and social justice and to expand and protect wages, benefits and working conditions. Our overarching goal is to improve the lives of all working families.

Our members work in virtually every area of public and private sector employment in King and Pierce Counties and across the State of Washington. You name a job and one of our members probably does it.  We have over 300 labor agreements that we bargain and enforce.

Local 117’s staff is among the most diverse and talented of any union.  Our office staff works tirelessly to ensure the accuracy of your negotiated collective bargaining agreements, to file your grievances in a timely manner, and to assist you when you have questions about benefits or union membership.  Our business representatives are deeply committed to providing outstanding representation. They know and understand the work that you do, and they know the importance of having reliable, professional and competent representation.

Unlike many other unions, Local 117 has an in-house legal department.  With attorneys on staff, our ability to fight difficult employers is unmatched.

Our Organizing Department is dedicated to increasing our density in core industries to make sure that we are industry-strong and positioned to bargain family wages and benefits.  We recently added a Communications Coordinator to our staff whose primary objective is to increase and improve our communications with our membership.

I am particularly proud of our network of over 400 shop stewards.  Our shop stewards are Local 117’s foot soldiers.  They are on the front line ensuring that employers are complying with their collective bargaining agreements, but they also do so much more.  Many of our stewards are active in their communities and are involved in local labor councils, they coordinate and participate in community organizations, and they engage in collective and political actions.

This is your Union.

Please check out our website to get a more complete picture of your Union.  And always free to e-mail me directly at tracey.thompson@teamsters117.org.

In Solidarity,

Tracey A. Thompson
Secretary-Treasurer
